DR. MEHDI NAJAFI

Mehdi Najafi, MD, PhD

Mehdi Najafi MD PhD received his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He then moved to Upstate New York, attending SUNY Upstate Medical University for a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Dr. Najafi completed his ophthalmology residency at SUNY Upstate where he served as Chief Resident. He then pursued a two-year fellowship in Medical and Surgical Disorders of Retina and Vitreous at the University of Minnesota.


Dr. Najafi is board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is currently a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology and Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He has dozens of publications in basic, translational and clinical research on a range of topics including retinal dystrophies, mechanisms of retinal detachment and macular holes. He has presented his work in national and international meetings including the American Society of Retina Specialists, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and Biophysical Society.


As a retina specialist, Dr. Najafi’s clinical practice is focused on the treatment of a variety of vision conditions including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vascular disorders of the retina and retinal detachment. Dr. Najafi enjoys teaching residents and fellows, which first began at the University of Minnesota and continues at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where he is also a staff surgeon.
